Cal Tjader was the vibraphonist who built a distinct West Coast branch of Latin jazz in San Francisco, blending Afro-Cuban rhythm, jazz improvisation, and charanga textures with Bay Area club life. His 1956 'Latin Kick' became a foundational West Coast amalgam, and his classic quintet with Vince Guaraldi, Al McKibbon, Mongo Santamaría, and Willie Bobo proved the music could be built through mixed personnel rather than ethnic essentialism.
