Abanico

The fanning timbal roll that cracks open the next section.

The abanico ('fan') is the timbalero's announcement: a rimshot-and-roll flourish that opens the door from one section into the next — often into the coro or a mambo. Ulpiano Díaz made the gesture famous in the 1930s, and Tito Puente named a 1949 hit after it: 'Abaniquito', the little fan.
