Cáscara ('shell') is the timekeeping pattern a timbalero plays on the sides of the drums during verses and quieter passages — dry, clicking, and locked to the clave. When the montuno arrives, the player shifts from the shells up onto the mambo bell, and everyone on the dance floor feels the gear-change.
