From around 2000 several different things were happening at once, not one comeback. Deliberate salsa-dura revivals set out to reintroduce the hard sound — the Spanish Harlem Orchestra in New York, La Excelencia's socially conscious lyrics, Barcelona's Tromboranga recovering the trombone front line, Orquesta Akokán rebuilding golden-era Cuban mambo. Separately, the 1996–97 Buena Vista Social Club relaunched older Cuban repertoire to a global market. And contemporary regional production — Colombian, Cuban, European, Japanese — kept making new music that isn't always a revival at all. Salsa dura had in fact continued through the 1980s–90s, so this chapter is less a resurrection than a global branching. Cali, recognised as Colombian heritage in 2022, shows the fullest version: salsa as a living urban culture of dancers, collectors and festivals.
