A cradle song with the whole history of the island tucked inside it. Eliseo Grenet writes 'Drume Negrita' as a lullaby — a nanny soothing a Black child to sleep, promising sweets she may never be able to buy — and the tenderness sits on top of an ache that everyone hears and no one names. Miguelito Valdés cuts an early recording with Machito's band, and Rita Montaner sings it too, but the reading that fixes it in memory is Bola de Nieve's: alone at the piano, turning a nursery rhyme into intimate art song. Later Omara Portuondo and Compay Segundo keep passing it hand to hand. The gentlest song here, and quietly one of the saddest.
