Cha-Cha-Cha Was an Accident

A genre born by solving a practical problem: giving social dancers a beat they could actually follow.

Some genres are designed, not born — engineered to solve a problem on the dance floor. Mambo's syncopation was hard for ordinary social dancers; the friction left them behind. Out of the Havana charanga world — the danzón de nuevo ritmo that Arcaño y sus Maravillas and the López brothers had been brewing — the violinist Enrique Jorrín smoothed the rhythm into something clean and walkable, a triple step you could hear in the name itself: cha-cha-chá. Tellingly, the 1953 disc that became the first cha-cha was still labelled something else; the practice arrived before the name caught up. Walk a genre invented by listening to dancers' feet.
