Changüí: The Eastern Sound That Kept Changing

An eastern Cuban party tradition survived beside son, then entered new urban bands without losing its rough rhythmic pull.

Changüí belongs to a nineteenth-century eastern Cuban complex that also includes nengón and kiribá, shaped by regional and Afro-Haitian crosscurrents. It did not simply turn into son in one neat event: early son emerged through several eastern and urban processes, while changüí continued as a local tradition of its own. This story follows that survival and modernization — from Guantánamo tradition bearers to Elio Revé and Los Van Van.
