The Band Was the School

Before there were music schools for this sound, there were bands. Join one, learn on the stand, then carry the music somewhere new.

This music did not develop through a neat line of influence. It grew inside working bands. Machito's Afro-Cubans gave musicians a place to learn how jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythm could live together. Tito Puente carried that experience into his own orchestra; Mongo Santamaría and Ray Barretto passed through Puente's band, then built new groups and new sounds of their own. When the Fania All-Stars brought them back onto the same stage, you could hear the whole network at once: teachers becoming peers, sidemen becoming leaders, and the band itself acting as the school.
