The Drummer Who Changes Jobs

One player, two instruments: the bongó talks through the verse, then the bell opens the montuno.

The bongocero has a structural role hidden inside a performance trick. During the song's verse, the bongó answers the singer with quick, conversational improvisation. When the montuno arrives, the same player reaches for the cencerro, and the hard bell pattern announces that the song has changed gears. Arsenio Rodríguez's conjunto made that switch part of the architecture. In Puerto Rico, Cortijo trained the dancer Roberto Roena on bongó and campana; Roena carried the role through El Gran Combo and finally to the front of his own Apollo Sound. The musician who signals the transformation eventually leads the spectacle.
