Salsa did not begin with a blank page. Singers and arrangers drew on a pan-Caribbean songbook of bolero, canción, guaracha and Afro-Puerto Rican narrative. Rafael Hernández and Pedro Flores wrote songs that travelled across decades and performers; Tite Curet Alonso then wrote directly for the salsa generation. These were not anonymous ghostwriters but credited composers with careers of their own. This is the pen behind the voice — and the route by which an older repertoire entered salsa.
