Salsa didn't just soundtrack Latin America — it reported on it: race, colonial memory, poverty, crime and dictatorship, all in clave.

Plena was Puerto Rico's sung newspaper, and salsa inherited the job: for half a century the barrio's front page was set to clave. This story follows eight dispatches — race and violence with Cortijo and Ismael Rivera, colonial memory through Tite Curet Alonso's pen, poverty and street life with Lavoe and Blades, slavery's defiance from Joe Arroyo's Colombia, and the dictatorships answered by 'Prohibido Olvidar.' Alongside classics like 'La Rebelión' and 'Calle Luna Calle Sol,' these songs did what newspapers couldn't: they made the truth danceable.
