Bomba and plena were never just roots — they powered salsa from the island out.

Puerto Rico was not merely a reservoir of roots for music made elsewhere. Rafael Cepeda and other tradition bearers kept bomba and plena active; radio, television, hotels and dance halls gave popular bands an island circuit of their own. Cortijo y su Combo made Afro-Puerto Rican repertoire and performance central to a modern dance band. The 1962 breakup then produced two branches — Ismael Rivera's solo path and Rafael Ithier's El Gran Combo — while Mon Rivera and Roberto Roena carried other parts of the language forward. This is an island institution building the next one.
