The Timbales Take Over

From the danzón's polite pailas to the front of the salsa stage — where the timbales came from, what they joined, and what they became.

Timbales had long helped drive Cuban dance orchestras, but the instrument's public role changed when percussionist-bandleaders placed it at the visual and musical centre of the ensemble. Tito Puente made that position inseparable from his identity in the mambo era. Nicky Marrero carried a featured timbales voice through the Fania All-Stars, and Willie Rosario built a long-running orchestra whose precision began at his own drums. The timbales never stopped accompanying; they became accompaniment, direction and spectacle at once.
