Why Cali Saved Salsa

Records, collectors, dancers and Colombian orchestras turned Cali into a living archive — and a production centre of its own.

'Saved' is an argument, not a claim that salsa died everywhere else. Cali became exceptional because listening itself became infrastructure: collectors protected old records, DJs and salsotecas kept them public, viejotecas made historical music present-tense, and dancers developed a local style around it. Caribbean ports moved the records; Medellín's Discos Fuentes built an industry; Bogotá and Cali produced orchestras; Cali turned the archive into civic life. Follow the chain from imported Cuban sides to Fruko, Joe Arroyo, Grupo Niche and Guayacán — music consumed, transformed and produced in Colombia.
